はじめまして
中長鋸製販（なかちょうのこぎりせいはん）三代目・中屋長二郎（登録商標）東賢一郎です。
鋸の作銘「中屋長ニ郎」から中、長をとって付けた店名です。

We are Nakacho Handsaw.
My name is Kennichiro Azuma, handsaw craftsman in Nagaoka City, Niigata, Japan.

私は、新潟県長岡市（旧三島町）の鋸鍛冶です。
伝統の焼き入れ法を用いて手引き鋸を製造しています。

I am a handsaw craftsman in Nagaoka City (former Mishima Town), Niigata.
I make handsaws by traditional oil-quenching method.

誕生日　5月5日　血液型A型　身長164㎝　
性格　　負けず嫌い　真面目　石橋を叩いても渡らない慎重派です。

鋸鍛冶初代の祖父の名前は、長次
二代目の父は、長一
そして、三代目の私は賢一郎
鋸に切る作銘は、「長二郎」です。

My grandfather, Choji (長二) was the first saw maker of our family line.
The second was Choichi (長一), my father.
And I, Kennichiro (賢一郎), am the third.
The signature on our saws is chojiro (長二郎).

鋸は、全て鋼でできており、硬くて真っ直ぐしかも弾力性があって丈夫。
それを作るには熟練の高度な技を要し、非常に手間がかかります。
そして、繰り返し目立てをすることにより何年でも使い続けることができます。

Since the whole body of saws is made of steel, they are not only hard and straight but also elastic and durable.
It takes really long time and highly sophisticated techniques to produce them.
Sharpening sawblades repeatedly makes it possible to use saws for years.

鉋鍛冶が多い与板町と隣接している旧三島町の鋸産業は、
今から160年ほど前、会津若松で鋸製造の修行を積んだ中屋庄兵衛が広めたのが始まりです。
昭和50年代は、60余軒もの鋸鍛冶があり、当製作所も従業員を7～8人抱えていました。
図工が得意な私は、迷うことなく二代目の父と同じ道を選びました。
高校卒業後、3年間三条市の同業者の元で修業をしました。
夢を抱いて帰ってきたものの良かったのは最初の３年でした。
従来の鋸は、大量生産の使い捨て替え刃式鋸に押され衰退の一途。
鋸鍛冶だけでなく目立て職人も姿を消していきました。
作るだけでは生活ができない。

The former Mishima Town (三島町) is next to Yoita Town (与板町), where there are many plane makers.
The saw industry in Mishima started about 160 years ago, when Shobe Nakaya (中屋庄兵衛) spread his handsaws in the town after he practised saw making in Aizu-Wakamatsu (会津若松).
Roughly from 1975 to 1985, there were about 60 handsaw manufacturers in Mishima, and we also used to have 7 or 8 employees.
I followed my father's path with no hesitation, since I was great at arts and crafts at school.
After graduating from high school, I spent 3 years for apprenticeship under the roof of my master in Sanjo City.
Only the first 3 years were great, however, since I returned from Sanjo.
The appearance of mass-production and replaceable-blade saws caused decadance of traditional handcrafted saws.
Not only handsaw craftsman but also saw repairers started disappearing.
Manufacturing saws was not enough to earn my living.

自分から売りに行きましたが売れない。不遇の時代が続きました。
鋸以外の品物は少しずつ売れるようになり、刃物研ぎも始めて
いつしか金物屋と研ぎ屋が表看板に……

I experienced long unlucky years when I couldn't sell my saws although I went from door to door.
But the items except saws were getting selling little by little, and I started sharpening knives, too.
Our shop's signboard changed to 'hardware and sharpening,' from 'handsaw' without people noticing.

「今どき在来品の高い鋸なんて売れないだろう」と言われるなかで、
しかし鋸職人としてのプライドだけは持ち続けました。
使ってもらえる鋸を作らなければ。
誰にも作れない切れる鋸を作り続けました。
その中の一丁（ミニ鋸）のおかげで2013年、かの有名なテレビ番組『和風総本家』（テレビ大阪）に取り上げていただけました（※）。
私の知らぬ間にミニ鋸は海を渡り、ストラディバリウスの発祥地であるイタリア・クレモナの高名なバイオリン製作・修理職人、Eric Blot（エリック・ブロット）氏の工房で使われていたのです。

I have kept my pride as a saw craftsman, even though people said, "Who would buy traditional expensive saws today?"
"I must make handsaws that people really want to use," I thought.
I continued making saws so sharp that nobody else could make.
As a result of my effort, TV program Wafu-Sohonke (和風総本家) featured one of our products, Mini Handsaws (we call it 'mininoko', ミニ鋸) in 2013.
Before I knew it, mininoko had gone across the sea; surprisingly, Eric Blot, one of the most famous violin makers and repairers in Cremona, Italy, which is the birthplace of Stradivarius, had been using one in his workshop.
Since the broadcast, my name and works rapidly got spread across Japan.
